Troubleshooting

If something used to work and no longer does, isolate the owner before you edit theme code. Most “theme bugs” are an app embed, leftover app code, a setting on a single section, or Shopify admin data.

Start here and follow the matching how-to. Do not start in the theme code editor.

Checkout, payments, shipping, and inventory live in Shopify Settings or Products, not Theme settings.

Theme, Shopify, or an app?

Theme: storefront look. Theme settings, sections, and default theme text.

Shopify admin: catalog and content. Products, Collections, Pages, and ContentMenus (the theme only displays the menu you assign) and Blog posts.

Outside the theme: checkout and payments (Settings), collection filters (Search & Discovery), and email, reviews, or subscription apps.

Outside the theme

Troop docs cover Edit theme settings and sections. The categories below never live in Theme settings, or only partly do. Use Shopify’s help centre first; use a Troop link when we explain how the theme connects.

Catalog and content (Shopify admin)

The theme displays what you assign; it does not create the data.

Email, reviews, subscriptions, and other apps

Campaigns, reviews, subscriptions, and many popups come from Apps, not Theme settings.

  • Choosing, embedding, and removing apps: Using apps with your theme
  • Shopify overview: Extending your theme with apps
  • Newsletter forms → Customers list: Troop signup forms add customers to Customers in admin; email campaigns need Klaviyo, Shopify Email, or similar. See Mailing list & newsletters under Content below (pick your theme).

Inside the theme

If the issue is on your storefront, Theme settings, a section, custom code, or an app embed, work through these steps in order. Stop when the store behaves; that step names the owner.

Work through these in order.

  1. Duplicate the theme (Online Store → Themes → Duplicate) so you can test without touching the live store.
  2. Turn off app embeds: Edit themeApp embeds, switch each one off, then preview. If the issue disappears, the app owns it. Contact that developer. See Using apps with your theme.
  3. Preview an unpublished, unmodified copy of the same theme version. If the issue is gone there, a customization or leftover app code in the live theme is the cause.
  4. Install a fresh copy from the Theme Store listing and preview it. If the issue is still there on a fresh install, submit a support ticket with the theme name, version, and a preview link.

Deleting apps

Many apps inject code into theme files. Deleting the app from Apps does not always remove that code. Ask the app developer how to uninstall completely. We can answer compatibility questions if you CC support.

Rollback changes

If a developer (or you) edited theme files around the time the issue started, contact them before submitting a ticket. In the Shopify code editor, a circle appears beside templates that have been modified. You can roll back a file.

Install a fresh copy

Start here, then follow the matching how-to. Do not start in the theme code editor.

Checkout, payments, shipping, and inventory, those are Shopify Settings or Products, never Theme settings. Download a fresh copy and preview it unpublished. If the problem is gone on the fresh copy, the live theme has customizations or leftover app code. If you need an older version, submit a support request.

When the issue is isolated to one topic

If the problem is limited to a single feature, colors on one section, a newsletter form, collection filters, and so on, you can skip the general steps above. Each guide ends with a Troubleshooting section for that topic alone. Links below jump straight there; where content differs by theme, pick yours.
