Customizing blogs in Blockshop

Blog posts, tags, excerpts, and featured images live in Shopify admin under Content. The theme controls how those posts appear: the blog grid, article page, and the Blog posts section you can add to other templates.

Content → Blog posts for writing and tagging. Edit theme → Default blog or Default article for layout.

Post body copy, checkout, and SEO titles are unchanged.

Write and tag posts

Open Content → Blog posts. Create or edit a post to set the title, body, excerpt, tags, and featured image.

Tags do two jobs in the theme:

  • They appear in the blog page tag filter (if that filter is on).
  • The Blog posts section can limit itself to articles that share one tag.

Use Manage blogs on that same admin page to rename a blog or turn comments on.

Blog page

Edit theme → template selector → Blogs → Default blog → Blog.

Posts list in reverse chronological order (newest first). Pagination appears when there are more posts than one page.

Grid

  • Columns: 1 to 4 on desktop. On mobile, 1 or 2.
  • Row layout: Evenly spaced keeps rows aligned. Staggered packs cards like masonry.
  • Maximum container width: Extra small through Full width, same control as other sections. Full width lets the grid run edge to edge.
  • Full width (under Mobile): lets cards bleed to the screen edge on small devices.

Card image crop is Theme settings → Images → Article image size, not this section. Natural keeps each featured image’s own ratio. A fixed ratio (Square, Landscape, or Portrait) makes a stricter grid.

For a uniform grid, shoot featured images to the same ratio as Article image size. Mixed ratios look calmer with Natural, or with Staggered row layout.

Title, filter, and RSS

  • Show blog title: the blog’s name from admin (for example Journal), not each article title.
  • Show tag filter: a dropdown of article tags. Turn this off if you do not want customers to filter the index.
  • Show RSS: a feed link in the blog footer.

To keep internal tags out of that filter, open Theme settings → Blog → Hide tags from tag filter. Enter a comma-separated list. The default is featured, pinned. Matching is not case-sensitive (pinned and Pinned both hide).

What each card shows

On the Blog section:

  • Show article heading: the post title. Article heading type is Medium or Small.
  • Show blog date and Show author
  • Show excerpt: the excerpt from the post editor, or a short trim of the body if the excerpt is empty.
  • Show button: the continue-reading link. That label is default theme content; search continue.

If Show article heading and Show button are both off, Show excerpt outputs the full article body on the blog page instead of a truncated excerpt. That is how an editorial index can read as captions under images, without a title or button on each card.

Heading type styles the blog title (Banner, Featured, Large, or Medium) when Show blog title is on.

Blog posts section

Edit theme → Add section → Blog posts. Add it to the homepage or any other template. This is not the blog index.

  • Choose blog: which blog to pull from.
  • Filter by tag: only articles with this tag appear (up to three). The default is pinned. Change the field, or tag posts to match it, in Content → Blog posts. If no posts have that tag, the section falls back to the latest three articles.
  • Show button, Show date, and Show excerpt control the cards in this section.
  • Media layout (under Mobile): Slideshow or Grid.

Tag spelling must match the filter field. pinned and Pinned are treated the same.

Article page

Edit theme → template selector → Blog posts → Default article.

The Article section shows the title, date, author, tags, sharing links, and the post body. It does not place the featured image.

The featured image still matters: blog cards use it, cropped by Article image size. To show it as a banner on the article page, add an image section (often Image with text overlay) above the Article section and connect the image to the article’s featured image. You can remove that section if you want a text-only article.

On the Article section:

  • Show title, Heading type, and Heading alignment
  • Show article date and Show author
  • Show article tags: tags you hid in Theme settings → Blog stay hidden here too.
  • Sharing: Facebook, 𝕏, Pinterest, email, and link. Turn each one off independently.

Maximum container width on this section has no Full width option (Extra small through Extra large). A narrower width keeps article copy readable.

The template can also include:

  • Recent articles: nearby posts from the same blog.
  • Comments: Shopify’s comment form, or Disqus if you enable it on the section. Comments must be turned on for that blog in Content → Blog posts → Manage blogs.

Images in the post body

When you insert an image in Content → Blog posts, set the size to Original so it spans the article column. Smaller presets can look cropped or undersized.

Ask Sidekick

Open Sidekick from the icon in your Shopify admin, then ask it to draft a blog post from a topic and a few notes.

Use it for a first draft or when you're stuck on an opening paragraph, then edit it in your own voice before publishing, Sidekick's content generation is meant as a starting point, not a final draft.

Troubleshooting

  • Can't find Blog posts: they are no longer under Online Store. Open Content → Blog posts. Use Manage blogs there to rename a blog or change comments.
  • Pinned posts missing from the homepage: Filter by tag is on the Blog posts section, not the blog index. The tag on the article must match that field.
  • Tag still shows in the filter: add it to Theme settings → Blog → Hide tags from tag filter, comma-separated. The blog section’s Show tag filter must be on for the dropdown to appear at all.
  • Grid looks uneven: featured images have mixed ratios, or Row layout is Staggered. Use the same crop and Evenly spaced for a strict grid, or keep mixed ratios on purpose.
  • Cards look cropped: Theme settings → Images → Article image size, not the post editor.
  • No featured image on the article page: the Article section does not display it. Add an image section on the article template, or check that the post has a featured image in Content → Blog posts.
  • Embedded images look cropped: in the article editor, set the image size to Original, not a small preset.
  • Comment form missing: comments are off for that blog in Manage blogs, or the Comments section is hidden or removed from the article template.
  • Continue reading wording: default theme content, not the Blog section.
