Understanding unlicensed themes on Shopify
If Shopify flags a theme as unlicensed, you may see an Action required notice in admin and lose access to some theme actions until it is resolved. This guide explains the merchant next steps in plain language.
Troop theme licensing
Troop themes are licensed exclusively through Shopify. We do not sell licenses through third-party marketplaces, resellers, or direct private downloads.
If you are using a paid Troop theme, the valid purchase path is the Shopify Theme Store.
What "unlicensed" means
In most cases, Shopify can't verify that the store using the theme has a valid license.
Common reasons:
- The theme was downloaded from a source outside the Shopify Theme Store.
- The theme was purchased for a different store and copied over.
- The license details don't match the current store owner/account.
How to fix it
If you receive an unlicensed-theme warning, start with this quick checklist:
- Check Online Store -> Themes in admin for the exact theme name.
- Confirm where and when that theme was purchased.
- Keep all communication inside Shopify admin and official support channels.
Then choose one of these paths:
- Buy the theme license for this store
- Purchase the theme from the Shopify Theme Store for the exact store where it is used.
- For Troop themes, this is the only valid way to obtain a license.
- Remove the theme
- Delete the flagged theme from your theme library if you do not plan to use it.
- Provide license details
- Follow the instructions in Shopify's notice or email and share any requested proof of purchase.
- Move a paid theme to another store (transfer)
- Shopify theme licenses are generally for one live store at a time.
- If you are changing stores, contact Shopify Support first to confirm transfer requirements for your case.
- Typical requirements include:
- Both stores are owned by you.
- The account ownership details align between stores.
- The original store is no longer using the licensed theme.
Avoid scams
Only trust licensing notices that match what you see in your Shopify admin. If an email looks suspicious, do not click links. Contact Shopify Support directly and verify first.
Shopify Plus
Shopify Plus does not use a separate theme-licensing policy for unlicensed theme notices. The same licensing rules and resolution steps apply across plans.
Many Plus merchants run multiple stores under one organization. Even in that setup, paid theme licenses are generally store-specific, and a theme can't be used as a licensed theme on multiple live stores at the same time.
If your Plus store is flagged, follow the same process above: verify your purchase, then purchase, remove, provide license details, or request a transfer with Shopify Support.
